You will need some kind of analytics in order to track your progress over time, Google analytics is free and gives information on your users. It requires a Gmail account. Sign up here! - Begin work on website’s page titles and meta descriptions.
These are your website’s ‘online ads’ to allow user to perform a search on any search engine. These serve as a way for the website user to identifying what your site or page is about. Search engines also use these descriptions to look for keywords or phases, where it can match search results in order to rank your site on the page. - Set up Webmaster tools kit accounts.
There are three webmaster tools kit that you should sign up for: Google webmaster tools, Yahoo site explorer and MSN webmaster tools. These tool kits are essential for identifying problems within your website like 404 errors (page not found), search engine crawler errors and other important items. - Create and upload an XML sitemap and Robots.txt file.
Both the xml sitemap and robots.txt file serve as a ‘writen guide’ to the search engines as to which pages are most important for the search engines to crawl (search through) and crawl first, or which pages not to search at all.
